The world of IT jobs is in constant ferment, and it’s fascinating to watch how new tools and technologies give rise to new jobs for people who practice various specialties. As you look at our list of the top technology jobs in North America by position or title, it’s interesting to observe that over half of them are less than a decade old. This kind of turnover means only one thing: that at least half of this list will be passé in the next 5-10 years, and that as old items fall off the bottom, new ones will enter from the bottom and the middle as the churn continues.
If there’s one lesson to take away from the volatility of items on lists like this one, it’s that working in IT means accepting the inevitability of change, and a need for constant learning and re-invention of one’s professional self. That’s why I’m such a big advocate of advanced degrees and professional certification: not because of the cachet or pay raises these accomplishments can -- and do -- so often bring, but because they represent two very good ways to keep high enough up on the learning curve to remain gainfully employed. Check out the following slides for some interesting job titles and the employment opportunities that go with them.
