SANs and LANs typically operate in parallel yet distinct networks. Both are necessary, but having two networks obviously adds complexity to IT infrastructure. With the help of a converged network adapter (CNA) and a Fibre Channel Over Ethernet switch, though, admins can meld these two networks and consolidate I/O traffic. CNAs are sold by Cisco, EMC, Emulex, HP, IBM, and others. Note that a dual-port CNA coupled with two FCoE switches will provide redundancy for failure protection and, again, allow 10 GbE to help streamline IT infrastructure. (image source)
