Improving Controllers - The 10 GbE Changeover

An Illustrated Guide to Making the Move to 10 Gigabit Ethernet
Improving Controllers - The 10 GbE Changeover

Given the knowledge that network traffic scales right alongside compute traffic, it has made sense for Intel to place itself in the forefront of the network interface controller market for the last three decades. In March of 2012, Intel announced its highly anticipated, fourth-generation 10 Gigabit Ethernet chip, the X540. The X540 is notable for being the industry’s first 10 GbE design able to consolidate the MAC and PHY controllers into a single chip, largely thanks to Intel’s ability to leverage its 40 nm fabrication processes for greater integration and lower power consumption.
