The enterprise world is knee-deep in making the transition from 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. In new data centers, 10 GbE is already the standard for core backbone infrastructure. The question becomes when established backbones will make the 10 GbE jump and when those connections will filter down to the workgroup and even workstation levels. As these numbers from Intel and Crehan research show, the answer is sooner rather than later, and nearly half of these connections will be low-cost 10GBASE-T (RJ45) within the next three years.
