If spreadsheets are not a reasonable solution anymore to keep track of datacenter equipment, an asset management application such as Racktables may be a much more helpful solution. Using the software, you can document virtually all components in a datacenter, including hardware assets, network addresses, space in racks, and network configuration. Still early in its development process, there is some lacking functionality such as limited switch support, but the software covers IPv4/IPv6 address management, 802.1Q VLAN management, CWDM and DWDM channel grids as well as neighbor discovery via CDP and LLDP.
