Accelerated was at Interop to show off its new HERO 9400-UA Network Appliance. The HERO 9400-UA is one of a growing number of offerings that allow for Software Defined Networking (SDN) in an appliance-type package for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs).

On the hardware side, the HERO 9400-UA sports 4 cores, 2GHz and 64 GB flash, as well as 16 GB of RAM. On the back there are three 10/100/1000 Ethernet WAN ports, two SFP ports, and four Ethernet LAN ports. There is a serial (RJ45) console port and two USB 2.0 ports, with one internal USB port.

The 9400-UA uses Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to handle a wide range of network functions. Supported VNFs include Cisco CSR1000V, Fortigate FortiOS, Brocade Vyatta, Windows 10/XP and more. Each 9400-UA can handle multiple functions thanks to support for multiple VNF machines on a single box. Thus, a 9400-UA can be a router, firewall and WAN accelerator, all in a single box.

Management can be done centrally using Accelerated’s own cloud-based management portal called Accelerated View. The secure portal can handle deployment and reconfiguration for multiple devices and locations, including managing the virtual machines on each 9400-UA. The Accelerated View console can also monitor devices individually or as administrator-defined groups.

James Dorough, VP of Sales, noted that the 9400-UA was particularly well suited to businesses with many locations, such as retail sales environments, where “rolling trucks” to each location was a costly and time-consuming task. Instead, a 9400-UA can be shipped to the location and connected and then used in whatever manner is necessary at the time, even changing roles in the future if necessary.

Dorough said that initial sales are targeting OEMs but that it may be available through retail channels later. He also noted that cellular support would be coming later in the year.

The list price for the HERO 9400-UA will start at $1,699.
