Moxa Releases AWK-3131A, Latest In Access Points/Bridges Lineup For Industrial Networks

Moxa announced the availability of the AWK-3131A, a new industrial grade wireless bridge capable of speeds up to 300 Mbps. Originally introduced as part of Moxa's new AWK-A series of products in early July, the AWK-3131A features seamless roaming and the company's AeroLink Protection technology, which together reduce downtime introduced through failures in industrial settings.

Designed to be compliant with industrial standards and approvals, the AWK-3131A is 802.11a/b/g/n compliant and can operate on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. It includes two dual-band omni-directional antennas, an RJ45-type RS-232 port and a LAN port. There are LED indicators for power, Ethernet power, fault, state, signal strength, WLAN and LAN. Power for the AWK-3131A is provided either through its two redundant power inputs or via PoE for ease of deployment.

Wireless access points such as the AWK-3131A act as a "bridge" between two clients, sending data wirelessly from one client to another. The receiving client sends this data to devices connected to it, effectively bridging the initial connection to these devices.

Wireless networks aren't perfect, and hardware failures or obstacles may interrupt the signal, resulting in slower speeds or even downtime. Moxa included AeroLink Protection in the AWK-3131A to combat such failures. AeroLink Protection works by providing two or more client nodes rather than one. A single node will act as the primary node, and all subsequent nodes will act as backup should the primary node fail. The backup nodes will restore the link within milliseconds should the connection with the primary node fail.

To ensure constant speeds, the AWK-3131A features seamless roaming. The AWK-3131A will seek stronger access points, but roaming between access points traditionally requires the initial connection to end before a new one is accessed. Seamless roaming eliminates the need to completely disconnect, reducing the handover time and providing an effectively seamless transition between access points. Moxa suggested that this technology is useful for remotely operated vehicles.
