Azure RemoteApp is Dead. Long Live XenApp Express

By - Source: Toms IT Pro

Microsoft's Azure RemoteApp, the cloud-based remote application delivery service, is shutting down as of August 31, 2017. It will be replaced by the Citrix XenApp Express, which is a result of a new collaboration between the two companies.

The product is currently under development, so it's possible the name will change. It will reportedly roll out in the fourth quarter of 2016. Microsoft has said it will "combine the simplicity of application remoting and scalability of Azure with the security, management and performance benefits of XenApp." The company also said it's committed to helping all Azure RemoteApp users make a smooth transition.

Citrix said customers should consider the XenApp Express merely a Azure Remote App 2.0. Kirill Tatarinov, Citrix CEO, said, "I would like to promise, personally, that we are committed to making sure that this new service shares the workflows and experience you love about Microsoft Azure RemoteApp."

If you don't want to switch to the Citrix product, you could move to a hosted solution or use Remote Desktop Services deployed on Azure Iaas. The company plans to reach out to users to further explain the options available. More details about the new product have been promised "in the coming months." The two companies are planning a live virtual event for August 23 where some of those details might be revealed.

Not that long ago it would have been unthinkable for Microsoft to shutter one of its own products in favor of a competitors. But the times, they are a changin. Will you be making the switch to Citrix?
