Read on to see our top choices for different needs and budgets.

How We Evaluate Laptops

Every laptop on this list was reviewed on our sister site, BusinessNewsDaily.com. We use precise, repeatable testing procedures to evaluate products and help our readers make informed buying decisions.

Our methods include industry-standard synthetic benchmark tests, including the Geekbench 3 performance test, the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test and the Laptop Mag Battery Test (also from a sister site). Then, we use a variety of in-house tests to assess each laptop's file transfer speed, display brightness and accuracy, and more. We interpret those results from a business and IT professional's point of view to determine which machines make the most sense for your company. What You Need to Know Before Buying an Acer Laptop

You get a wide variety of security, durability and manageability options across Acer's laptop lineup. Here's a rundown of what to expect from the brand.

Acer TravelMate vs. Aspire vs. Chromebook

Acer sells work-ready laptops in three distinct lines. Here's a quick breakdown.

  • TravelMate: Acer's business-class Windows laptops fall under the TravelMate line. These systems come equipped with extra durability credentials to withstand dings, dust, extreme temperatures and more. The TravelMate P4 and P6 lines come offer strong security options, including hardware encryption as well as a fingerprint reader on some models. But note that the TravelMate P2 line, despite bearing the TravelMate name, does not currently offer any extra security features over your average consumer laptop.
  • Aspire: Acer's Aspire line includes premium consumer laptops that aren't as durable or secure as TravelMate P4 and P6 systems. But they offer slicker designs and plenty of power, making them capable options for intendant workers.
  • Chromebook: Acer sells one Chromebook model that's designed for work, with a durable design and built-in manageability options. Chromebooks run on Google's simple Chrome OS, though, which won't meet the needs of all workers.

Security

Acer's business laptops offer a variety of security features.

  • Encryption: TravelMate P4 and P6 laptops are outfitted with a Trusted Platform Module, which ensures your work files stay private by encrypting your data at the hardware level.
  • Biometric security: Some Acer systems come with a fingerprint reader that lets you unlock your laptop just by touching it.
  • Lock slot: All TravelMate laptops have a lock slot that lets you physically chain your system to your desk as a deterrent to thieves.

Manageability

Many of Acer's business laptops offer special manageability tools.

  • vPro: Some high-end TravelMate models come with secure manageability options via Intel vPro technology. vPro is a remote management platform baked right into high-end Intel processors, allowing you or your IT team to access laptops at the hardware level, even when a system has been powered down. It's useful for running group policy and software updates, as well as locating, locking or wiping laptops that have been lost or stolen.
  • Deployment: Unlike manufacturers such as Dell, Lenovo and HP, Acer does not offer on-site deployment services. However, TravelMate laptops do come with Acer's Smart Setup software, which can guide you through the server configuration and deployment process.

Durability

TravelMate laptops have tough designs.

  • MIL-SPEC: TravelMate laptops offer MIL-SPEC durability credentials, which means they've been tested to withstand dings, vibrations, humidity, extreme temperatures and more.

Reliability

Acer offers a variety of services to ensure the reliability of its PCs.

  • Warranties: TravelMate laptops come with a limited two-year warranty that covers hardware defects. Extended warranties, as well as warranties covering accidental damage, are also available for purchase.
  • Tech support: Acer offers both online chat and over-the-phone technical support for all in-warranty laptops. Out-of-warranty support is also available for a fee, covering software and hardware issues, device upgrades, network setup, malware removal, data backup and more.

Software

Most Acer laptops ship with lots of preinstalled software. That includes some useful utilities, as well as lots of bloatware.

  • Operating system: Most Acer laptops ship with Windows 10, but some TravelMate systems come with Windows 7 Professional instead. Users who want to downgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 7 will find good driver support on Acer's website.
  • Utilities: Some useful utilities are included on Acer's TravelMate laptops. One is the ControlCenter app, which lets you see your computer's health and hardware configuration info at a glance. Then there's Dust Defender, which reverses the system's airflow to clean out the vents and help prevent overheating. Power Management, meanwhile, lets you see what's consuming your laptop's battery life.
  • Bloatware: You'll usually find lots of unwanted software, often called bloatware, on new Acer laptops. These apps include games like Candy Crush and social media apps such as Twitter.

Design

The look of Acer's business laptops varies widely between the different lines. TravelMate systems are typically boxy and unassuming, with simple but tough plastic or carbon fiber designs that don't draw attention to themselves. Acer's Aspire line, meanwhile, features systems with slimmer profiles and sleeker designs. Other models vary in terms of design, including the TravelMate 14 for Work, which boasts a glossy Gorilla Glass lid.
