Best Hosted VoIP Solutions for Business 2018
By , Pamela S. Stevens

Pros: Low-priced options, no annual contracts, unified communications, build-your-own plans

Limitations: Vonage does not support on-site PBX configurations or analog adapters.

Vonage is a publicly held company that provides business VoIP phone services for small businesses as well as midmarket and enterprise-sized companies. Phone lines start as low as $9.99 per month, and local and toll-free numbers are available. Build-your-own plans are available if you prefer to design your own systems, or Vonage can help you create the best configuration for your company and budget. Unlike with many phone services, Vonage's pricing is available online, so you can easily figure out how much the system will cost without having to request a formal quote.

It offers more than 40 business phone features, including virtual receptionists, voicemail, forward to mobile, caller ID, text messaging, international calling and paging. You can manage the system using the admin portal.

The admin portal also allows you to customize phone features, view reports, manage billing, view training sessions, add phone extensions and manage updates. Training sessions are offered four times per day. The service is compatible with popular Cisco and Polycom phones and conference calling units; however, equipment leasing is not available.

Vonage uses virtual PBXs to provide service rather than offering an on-premise PBX option, which would not make it a good option if you desire to host your own service or use a hybrid option. Since you cannot host the service yourself, you'll want to carefully evaluate Vonage's security protocols to see if they meet your security needs.

Vonage provides standard features such as conference calling, text voicemails and online fax services. Integrations are available for connecting to Office 365, Bullhorn, Salesforce, Clio, Google Apps and ConnectWise. Free mobile and desktop apps are also available.

With the desktop (PC or Mac) app, you can use Vonage with softphones. Using a softphone is a low-priced option, and the desktop app adds many productivity features, such as the ability to review call histories and see others' call statuses, simple text messaging, and tools for chatting with co-workers. All features can easily be added using the admin portal, and, with a few exceptions, the set of 40 basic features is included with the regular service plan.

Bottom Line

Vongage is a solid option for a low-cost upfront investment into a new VoIP phone system. To read the full review, check it out on our sister site Top Ten Reviews.
