12. Six Sigma

A set of manufacturing practices, first put to use by Motorola in 1986, meant to ensure that 99.99966% or greater manufactured parts are defect-free.

Significance

Six Sigma was founded on the realization that improving quality leads to a reduction in overall costs. As such, not only does Six Sigma set out a set of guidelines on how products should be manufactured, but it also represents a corporate philosophy centered on the pursuit of perfection throughout an organization.
