Mainframes were extremely expensive to use and required enormous resources in space, operation and cooling. As IBM introduced the first recognized PC, the model 5150, in 1982, companies worldwide began deploying desktop computers throughout the organization and saw a significant benefit in computers that required little support and ran with simple air-cooling.
