D-Link announced the release of a new dual-port 10 gigabit Ethernet adapter, the DXE-820T. Standard PCI networking cards are limited by traditional 32-bit, and even 64-bit PCI bus architectures, but the DXE-820T is designed to work with high-speed PC Express (PCIe) bus architecture. This allows total throughput rates of up to 40 Gbps.

The architecture allows the DXE-820T to support 10 Gbps speeds on each port at distances up to 100 m with CAT-6A cabling, or up to 50 m on lower-rated cabling. The card is also compatible with existing 1 GbE networks, although most purchasers of a high-end card like this one will be buying it for its ability to support the highest possible speeds. With Smart Load Balancing, the DXE-820T provides the option to configure multiple adapters to work together, sharing traffic and improving reliability.

The DXE-820T also offers TCP, UPD and IP checksum offloading, which removes the responsibility for checksum processing from the server's CPU to the network card itself, increasing overall machine performance while still producing 20 Gbps network speeds.

Director of Product Marketing, Steven Olen, said that the DXE-820T is, "… an excellent complement to our new 10 Gigabit Copper Switch, and makes upgrading to 10 Gigabit technology more affordable than ever."

On the power side, the DXE-820T has low power consumption, with a maximum power consumption of 23.38 watts, and it also supports IEEE 802.3az, which offers reduced power usage when no data is being transmitted.

On the management side, the card supports onboard 802.1Q VLAN tagged Ethernet screening, which allows network administrators to assign multiple subnets to a server, and then isolates devices within a VLAN from the rest of the network. Also supported are 802.3x flow control, jumbo frames, and SNMP for network management and monitoring.

D-Link offers driver support for Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012; RHEL 5.9, 6.4 and 6.5; SLES 11.2 and 11.3; and Solaris 11 and 11.1.

The DXE-820T Dual-port 10GBASE-T adapter lists for $529.99 with a one-year limited warranty, although a price check this morning found it for $405.99 at one online retailer (CDW).
