D-Link Intros Chassis-Based Switch for Enterprise Networks

By - Source: D-Link Press Release

On Wednesday D-Link expanded its portfolio of chassis-based switching solutions with the DGS-6608, an eight-slot chassis switch. This new switch provides L2/L3 forwarding/routing features and enterprise-wide security features for enterprise local area networks (LAN), campus and metropolitan area networks (MAN).

According to the company, the DGS-6608 is designed to excel in environments that require continuous running of network applications at a high level of performance, security and control. This switch features an eight-slot chassis that reserves two open slots for redundant control modules and six additional slots for user-selectable I/O port modules. These control modules come equipped with their own switch fabric and management agent. The switch also provides up to eight redundant load-sharing power supplies and a hot swappable fan module.

The DGS-6608 delivers switch capacity of up to 1.152 Tbps and system performance of up to 857.14 Mbps. The switch also includes Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) router redundancy, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)/Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP), Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), and Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) without the need for additional licenses. The device even combines high-speed hardware with software functions, such as prioritized traffic Quality of Service (QoS) and multicast routing, to support real-time applications, including Internet telephony, streaming multimedia and Internet Protocol television (IPTV).

The DGS-6608 includes "a power saving mode that automatically powers down ports that have no link or link partner; Smart Fan adjusts speed and power according to specified temperature; and Time-based PoE which turns PoE on/off per port by a pre-defined time profile to reduce PoE power consumption," reads the company's announcement.

Additional features include deployment as an aggregation switch to provide high port density connections to workstations in an office environment, and port modules that are hot-swappable so that users aren't required to change any hardware or software, and complete IPv6 support. Port densities can reach 288 Gigabit / 96 10-Gigabit ports per 8-slot chassis.

D-Link's new DGS-6608 is now available through its network of channel partners, including "value-added" resellers and distributors. The company also offers starter kits that include a chassis with a control module, power supply and various I/O modules. For more information, visit
