It can be argued that the biggest change in between the way data was stored at the enterprise level in 1980 and today is the networking of hard drives. The first network-attached server (via ethernet) was NetApp’s FAServer 400, which launched in 1993. It had only 30 commands, but a 70-page manual, according to the company. Companies paid $16,000 for the privilege of sharing their data across a network.
