Eckert-Mauchly UNIVAC I - Data Center Storage Through the Years

The Universal Automatic Computer--an early American commercial computer built in 1951 and used widely by the government--was the first to use magnetic tape to store data. It recorded data to tape using its UNISERVO drive (a half-inch wide nickel-plated phosphor bronze strip). It wrote 12,800 characters of data per second.
