Datos IO emerged from stealth in September of 2015 as a data protection and backup company focusing on cloud and database services running at scale. Today, the company announced the first in a line of products centered around that market. Datos IO RecoverX is a scalable backup and recovery solution that is aware of clusters and provides key features to help restore databases in minutes instead of hours.

Datos IO RecoverX focuses specifically backing up high performing services such as Cassandra and MongoDB. It runs on-premises or in the cloud, and is licensed through an annual subscription, with pricing based on the number of Terabytes (TB) in the dataset being backed up. Some of the first markets that Datos IO sees as being able to achieve great success in are the e-commerce, product catalogs, software as a service (SaaS) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Whether running in the cloud or as an on-prem service, Datos IO utilizes a three-node cluster to perform backups. Efficiencies of the process are made by distributing the backup jobs to your cluster and are also improved by efficient use of metadata for storing and retrieving data.

MongoDB and Cassandra are not new, and for as long as people have been using them the services have been backed up. But up until now, most companies have had to rely on built in backup utilities within the software to perform that function. However, those built in utilities, while they are fine as a beginner solution, have limitations. For instance, the MongoDB backup utilities only backup a single node at a time. Since Cassandra can have as many as 20 nodes, the more robust backup experience is certainly a benefit. Additionally, cloud service providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform do not offer point in time recovery for MongoDB and Cassandra.

As an initial release, Datos IO RecoverX offers teams running MongoDB or Cassandra a nice option to consider. And since they company is just getting started, it's certain that the number of services that are connected will expand in the coming months.

Datos IO RecoverX is available today and supports Apache Cassandra versions 2.0 and 2.1 and MongoDB versions 3.0 and 3.2.
