EMC has announced the DLm8000 virtual tape library for mainframe environments.

The new product is designed as an alternative for physical tape libraries to provide businesses a consistent storage solution between production and data recovery sites. It complements EMC's existing virtual tape libraries DLm6000, DLm2000, and DLm1000 as a new high-end solution.

The DLm8000 is based on EMC's VMAX storage array and promises data throughput of 2.7 GBps with continuous data replication to one or two recovery sites. According to EMC, mainframe users can perform end-to-end disaster recovery testing without stopping replication and compromising the readiness of recovery. Up to 2,048 drives and a maximum of 5.7 PB can be emulated and dynamically allocated to different processes.

The DLm8000 will be available in the fourth quarter of the year. Pricing has not been announced.
