EnGenius Announces ECB1200, EAC1200H Wireless Access Points

By - Source: EnGenius Technologies

EnGenius Technologies recently announced two 2x2 AC1200 additions to its line of indoor wireless access points. The ECB1200 is a desktop or wall-mounted model, and the EAC1200H is the ceiling-mounted version.

Although the mounts and the shape are different between the ECB1200 and EAC1200H, the underlying hardware is similar. Both are dual-band wireless access points running on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The 2.4 GHz band is 802.11n at up to 300 Mbps, and the 5 GHz is 802.11ac running at a maximum speed of 866 MHz. The transmit power is 26 dBm.

Security on both is WPA2, each has an SSID that can be hidden in the beacons, and they feature MAC Address filtering and client and L2 isolation modes. Each model uses a Kensington security slot to provide physical security of the devices.

Connections to the devices are made through a gigabit Ethernet port, which has support for Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Users manage the devices through EZ Controller, which runs on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. They both support fast roaming and email alerting, and they can be used with a RADIUS server for account management.

Differences between the models are in the antenna configuration and in the operating modes. The EAP1200H uses a 360-degree radial antenna, while the ECB1200 uses four external antennas. Although both devices can operate as an access point, a wireless distribution system (WDS) AP, and a WDS bridge, the ECB1200 also can operate as a WDS station and a client bridge.

Eric Chen, Director of Product Management at EnGenius, explained why the company went with something less than a 3x3 MIMO AP. "Today, tablets and smartphones have a single Wi-Fi antenna, and standard laptops typically have two Wi-Fi antennas which means that these devices are capable of supporting 1x1 or 2x2 AC technology which means that they cannot realize the full benefit of a 3x3 MIMO access point," he said in a press announcement.

Both the ECB1200 and the EAP1200H have an MSRP of $249, and they'll be available soon.

The EnGenius Electron series of wireless access points includes the EAP line of ceiling-mounted access points and the ECB line of desktop client bridges, as well as the ENS line of outdoor access points.
