HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw Printer Review

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw Printer Review

The $219.99 HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw is an affordable, fast black-and-white laser printer, but the ink cartridges will cost you. Read our full review here.

Pros: Consistent print speed; Quality black-and-white printing; Print from mobile; Apple AirPrint support; Google Cloud Print; 256MB memory; Compact design

Limitations: Not a color printer; Expensive ink

The $219.99 HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw is an affordable and fast black-and-white laser printer, but the ink cartridges are not and can end up costing you a small fortune. This printer is intended for low usage with a monthly recommended page volume of up to 1,500 pages. The reported monthly duty-cycle is 10,000 pages. This printer is best suited for small offices or individuals who do not need to print documents often, and for those who do not need color printing. In fact, the LaserJet Pro would serve well as a low-cost second printer reserved for black and white printing.

Print Quality & Cost

The black-and-white test prints on the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw were clear and a number of fonts rendered well. However, copies were blurry. Because this printer doesn't support color, we printed color test files in black and white. Images and graphics printed well in grayscale.
HP ink cartridges are not cheap. A single black cartridge costs a high $62.99, which is more than the ink cartridges of all but one printer, the Xerox WorkCentre 6027, which costs $76.99.

Print Speed

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw is the fastest printer we tested. It averaged a print time of 22 black-and-white pages per minute (ppm), which is a bit slower than its claimed speed of 23 ppm. The average print time we recorded in our tests was 17.6 ppm. Print times were consistent within a second or so per test print job.

This is a compact, light printer measuring 16.66 x 11.34 x 11 inches. This printer is suitable for individuals who have limited desk space. One nice thing with this printer is that you don't need to access the back of the machine often. It's also smaller than the other printers tested.

The touchpad is smaller than most at 2.7 inches, and it does not have a separate traditional keypad for entering fax numbers, which is annoying. But it is low-priced and best for limited use. If you fax a lot of documents, you'll want a printer with a larger keypad which will speed up entering fax numbers.

For the $219.99 price, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw is adequate. It does not print color documents, so if that's essential for your business, this printer isn't for you. However, if you print a small number of black-and-white documents, this printer is surprisingly consistent and dependable.
