HP announced the mt245, a mobile thin client loaded with enough hardware and software to keep a mobile worker connected without having to carry their data out to the field with them.

This isn’t the first mobile thin client from HP. The previous model, the mt41, is still available and is not being replaced by the mt245.

While the mt41 is made to be durable and rugged, the mt245 adds some additional software. Overall, the hardware options are largely the same between the two models, though the mt245 does have more moderate hardware and is expected to be priced lower than the mt41.

The mt245 runs Windows Embedded Standard 7P 64 bit, with Internet Explorer 11 for connectivity. It also includes HP Device Manager, HP Velocity and HP Easy Shell.

HP Device Manager is an administration tool for managing onsite and remote thin clients. It includes tools for discovery and configuration of the clients and lets you load images via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and deploy security certificates to the thin clients.

HP Velocity is network bandwidth accelerator software. It's installed on all HP thin clients and can increase the effective bandwidth speed 3-7 times faster than running without HP Velocity. This can help with all network functions on the mt245, including video frame rates and VoIP quality.

HP Easy Shell is a quick access shell that is easy to use for both administrators and users. You can configure the shell to link directly to multiple websites, applications, and connections to Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions or a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment.

The mt245 mobile thin client has a 14-inch display (1366 x 768) and is powered by a quad-core AMD A66310 APU with Radeon R4 Graphics (1.8 GHz, up to 2.4 GHz, 2 MB cache). It can be configured with up to 4 GB of DDR3L-1600 RAM and has a 16 GB M.2 SSD.

The connection options for the mt245 include Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4. The connectivity is one area that separates the mt41 and the less expensive mt245; the mt245 is not going to have 3G/4G wireless broadband, whereas the mt41 does. And while there is a Gigabit Ethernet port on the mt41, the mt245 only includes 10/100 Mbit Ethernet.

Mobile thin clients are a great option for field workers that primarily connect to remote applications or websites to perform their data operations. It can help protect company data coming in two ways: first, by never storing the data from the cloud on the local system, and again by using the built-in Microsoft Write Filter for Windows Embedded 7, which filters data sent up to those cloud services from the mt245.
