HP ProLiant Gen 9 Servers Are Just Around the Corner

By - Source: Toms IT Pro

HP announced its new ProLiant Generation 9 (Gen9) servers as part of the company's new vision for IT utilizing software defined data centers (SDDCs), in which the compute layer exists as a pool of processing resources that are highly available, scalable, and located anywhere. Under this architecture cost savings can be realized while simultaneously delivering higher levels of performance. Read: AMD Opteron Seattle: More 64-bit ARM SoC Details Emerge

"The rise of mobile, cloud, social and big data is driving the need for a new approach to the data center and its processing engine -- the server -- to enable successful business outcomes," said Antonio Neri, Senior VP and general manager for servers and networking at HP.

On the hardware side of this equation the HP Proliant Gen9 servers feature HP's PCIe accelerators and HP SmartCache for enhanced disk throughput of up to one million IOPS supported with 12GB controllers; HP DDR4 SmartMemory up to 2.333 MHz with 14 percent faster memory performance for HP Rack and Tower servers and 33 percent for HP Blade servers; and HP Virtual Connect FlexFabric network interfaces for improved data center performance and flexibility.

Based on HP's testing (PDF available here) an HP Proliant XL220a delivered four times better performance per dollar/per watt compared to a comparable Dell Blade M620 for a single threaded application per server.HP's Proliant Gen 9 Family: ML350 Tower, DL360, DL380, HP Blade Chassis and HP ProLiant XL230aHP's Proliant Gen 9 Family: ML350 Tower, DL360, DL380, HP Blade Chassis and HP ProLiant XL230a

In conjunction with the ProLiant Gen9, HP is introducing its Server Management software. HP Server Management works with enterprise management solutions provided by VMware, Microsoft and Red Hat. Using open RESTful APIs this software allows IT professionals to securely provision Gen9 servers, providing a common management interface for converged data centers. HP Server Management has the ability to update firmware across hundreds of servers in minutes rather than hours. It also provides a common interface for integrating cloud-based environments.

Detailed technical specs for the new HP Proliant Generation 9 Servers are not available at this time but will be announced at the Intel Developer's Forum, September 9 - 11. The new servers will be available starting September 8.
