Free Software-Defined Storage With HP ProLiant Servers

By - Source: Hewlett Packard

Last week an HP rep said that small and midsize businesses (SMBs) do recognize the IT management and cost benefits that server virtualization can deliver. Unfortunately, budget limitations often become roadblocks for these organizations to optimize their infrastructure and to realize these benefits. Enter HP StoreVirtual Storage Appliance (VSA) software, which smashes through that roadblock. The VSA software is now available at no additional cost with the purchase of HP ProLiant Servers.

"To unlock the full benefits of server virtualization in the most space- or budget-constrained environments, organizations need a converged approach to resilient, shared storage that supports their data-intensive virtualized workloads," said David Scott, senior vice president and general manager, Storage, HP. "HP is the only storage provider that delivers powerful, efficient servers combined with free software-defined storage to help our customers maximize server virtualization ROI, even with a limited budget."

According to HP, the integration of HP StoreVirtual VSA into HP ProLiant servers will enable customers to leverage up to 1 TB of software-defined storage to reduce their hardware footprint in half, and reportedly realize savings of up to 80 percent of the cost of deploying shared storage for virtualization. Integration will also simplify deployment and improve flexibility with either VMware or Microsoft virtualization environments without the need for dedicated storage expertise.

"HP believes that SMBs need a cost-efficient, consolidated infrastructure with shared storage to maximize server virtualization investments. According to IDC, the converged infrastructure market is set to more than triple over the next three years, as business demand increases," the HP rep said.

Integration will also enhance agility by scaling compute and storage in parallel as business needs change and application workloads grow. Risk is also reduced by keeping data highly available through clustering and built-in disaster recovery, including VMware Metro Storage Cluster support.

"With this program, small and midsize business (SMB) customers no longer need to suffer from 'enterprise envy' as it relates to their storage infrastructure," reads the company's press release. "HP is the only major server vendor to deliver software-defined storage as a free component with a server purchase. The company anticipates providing SMB customers access to more than an Exabyte of VSA storage during the next 12 months."
