HP Announces VMware Collab for SDN and OpenStack

By - Source: Toms IT Pro

This week at VMworld 2014, HP and VMware announced the federation of the HP Virtual Application Network (VAN) SDN Controller with the VMware NSX network virtualization platform. In addition, HP Helion OpenStack, HP's distribution of the open source cloud platform, OpenStack, will support VMware NSX network virtualization and interoperability with VMware's vShpere in the near future. By integrating the HP VAN SDN Controller with the VMware NSX network, the HP-VMware collaboration will provide customers with an integrated solution for managing both the virtual and physical network infrastructure. HP and VMware hope that this will ease the transition to the software defined data center (SDDC) for companies looking to build private, hybrid or public clouds, a transition that many see as inevitable.

This solution is based on federation APIs integrating VMware NSX and HP VAN SDN, HP's converged control SDN app which brings physical and virtual network components under a common control interface using HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC) with SDN Manager using an integrated plug-in for VMware vCenter support, and the HP FlexFabric 5930 switch for automated provisioning of the virtual network.

The OpenStack project began as a joint venture of Rackspace Hosting and NASA to create a free and open source cloud computing platform and is currently overseen by the OpenStack Foundation. The OpenStack project has the support of over 200 companies, including AT&T, Intel, Sony and Yahoo as well as HP and VMware. HP introduced its Helion portfolio of OpenStack based cloud products and services in May of this year and was a founding platinum member of the OpenStack Foundation. Both companies are long time contributors to the OpenStack community.

A forthcoming commercial release of HP Helion OpenStack will include support for VMware vSphere and a future release will support VMware NSX network virtualization. HP's OpenStack software is supported by HP Helion OpenStack Professional Services.

The complete HP-VMware networking solution will be available worldwide in 2H 2014. Other release dates are as follows:

  • HP Converged Control SDN Application, 2H 2014;
  • HP FlexFabric 5930 Top-of-Rack Switch, December, 2013;
  • HP Virtual Application Networks SDN Controller, Q4 2013.
