By - Source: Tom's Hardware US

HP has announced the release of a new HP ProLiant DL580 Generation 8 server powered by Intel's very recently announced second-generation Xeon E7 v2 processors. The announcement yesterday also mentioned upcoming upgrades to the HP ProLiant DL560 and BL660c servers.

One of the new Intel Xeon E7-8800 v2 or E7-4800 v2 processors will power the HP DL580 rack-mount server. HP states that this new Gen8 server will outperform its previous generation servers and claims up to 45 percent lower total cost of ownership (TCO), 30 times faster transaction processing when leveraging in-memory capabilities, and 93 percent less downtime with HP validated and certified firmware and driver compatibility.

The HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 server addition to HP's scale-up portfolio includes support for Gen8 capabilities such as Integrated Lifecycle Automation, Dynamic Workload Acceleration, and ProActive Insight Experience capabilities. It includes hardware updates over the prior generation HP ProLiant DL580 G7 server that, of course, includes the new Intel Xeon Processor E7 - 4800/8800 v2 product family, 96 DIMM slots, 9 PCIe 3.0 Input/Output slots, and 10 x 12 Gb/s SFF drive slots.

This high-end server is targeted for workloads in medium to large enterprises that are working with analytics, large-scale transaction processing, big data, data warehousing, and business intelligence applications. If the organization can afford leveraging the processor's large-scale in-memory management capability then the server, with room for 96 DIMMs, would be perfect for large-scale in-memory compute, virtualization, and database analytics.

"With the increased performance and higher memory capacity of HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 servers, we can provide our customers with cutting-edge solutions to dissolve big data bottlenecks," Christopher O'Malley, chief executive officer, Velocidata. "This technology reduces capital and operational costs, allowing us to continue building the world’s fastest data transformation, data quality and data simplification appliance-based solutions."

HP will be upgrading its line of HP ProLiant DL560 and BL660c rack and blade optimized servers over the next few weeks which will give those servers a boost as HP incorporates Intel's other Xeon E7 v2 processors into those Gen8 servers.

According to the announcement, the HP ProLiant DL580 Gen 8 is available now at an estimated starting price of $13,079.
