HPE Certification Guide: Overview And Career Paths

HPE Certification Guide: Overview And Career Paths
By , Mary Kyle

HP recently rebranded most of its IT certifications as HPE certs and today offers credentials in big data, cloud computing, networking, security, storage, IT management and more.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is a global provider of information technology products, software and services to consumers, small and medium-sized organizations, and enterprises. HP is perhaps best known as the leading manufacturer of PCs, but it also shines in the areas of server hardware, data storage, networking hardware, and printing and imaging products. The company was founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and David Packard, and today generates over $103 billion in net revenues. HP is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

In November 2015, HP spun off all enterprise-level products into a new corporate entity—namely, the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE). Most HP certifications have been rebranded as HPE certs, although you'll find many that still bear the HP designation in their names.

HPE offers a number of associate, professional, expert and master level certifications for individuals working with HP's cloud, big data, data center, IT management, operating systems, networking, security, server, storage, converged infrastructure and software products.

HPE Certification Program Overview

The HPE certification program technical/product path includes five main certification skill levels:

  1. Associate: HP Accredited Technical Associate (ATA)
  2. Foundational: HPE Product Certified
  3. Professional: HPE Accredited Technical Professional (ATP)
  4. Expert: HPE Accredited Solutions Expert (ASE)
  5. Master: HPE Master ASE

The ATP, ASE and Master ASE levels offer certification paths in big data, data center and cloud computing, networking, IT management, operating systems, security, servers and storage. Each certification path offers two or more credentials. Below, we cover each of the certification levels in more detail.

The number of exams per certification varies. Depending on geography, exam prices are generally $100 to $200 USD for proctored exams. The fees for Web based exams (HPE2-xxx, HP2-xxx, HPE3-xxx and HP3-xxx) range from $20 to $100. Upgrade exams usually run $25 to $50 USD. Across the board, HPE training courses are recommended but not required.

HPE Certification Levels

Associate Level: HP Accredited Technical Associate (ATA)

The HP Accredited Technical Associate (ATA) is a beginning architect-level certification designed for individuals in academic and government training programs. More specifically, the HP ATA program helps candidates learn how to develop technology solutions based on business objectives to prepare them for real-world jobs.

ATA certifications focus on IT architect, IT for business, connected devices, networks, servers and storage, and cloud technologies. An ATA certification is the first step toward higher level certifications, from professional through master. With an ATA cert, individuals can pursue jobs such as support technician, network or system administrator, systems engineer and solution architect in small to medium-sized environments.

Foundation Level: HPE Product Certified

The HPE Product Certified credential is a foundation-level credential that targets professionals who recommend HPE products and can demonstrate them to customers. Typical job roles include technical engineers (presales and sales) and consultants. Demonstrated skills include knowledge of functions and key features, an understanding of product strengths and customer benefits, along with the ability to perform common tasks relating to product setup, installation and configuration.

Professional Level: HPE Accredited Technical Professional (HPE ATP)

The HPE Accredited Technical Professional (ATP) is aimed at individuals in small to mid-market environments who can design, architect, install and configure HPE network solutions. The skill set of an HPE ATP includes wireless technologies for data centers and large networks.

As of November 1, 2011, the ATP replaced the Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS) credential for the most part, but you might still see references to AIS for people who already acquired those certifications.

Expert Level: HPE Accredited Solutions Expert (HPE ASE)

An HPE ASE certification identifies individuals who design, architect, implement, manage and support global IT solutions. At this level, a credential holder typically works in a job such as IT architect, integrator or solutions experts. An ASE works with much more complex technologies than an ATP and often needs to juggle the details of a distributed environment.

Master Level: HPE Master Accredited Solutions Expert (Master ASE)

An HPE Master ASE credential is the top-shelf cert in the HPE certification program. A person who has achieved HP Master ASE certification is well versed in HP technologies and enterprise solutions, and can match them to IT business strategies to meet requirements. This individual is also capable of overseeing the implementation of complex solutions from the proposal stage through deployment in a production environment.

HPE Big Data Certifications

HPE's Big Data certification portfolio includes credentials that validate a candidate's ability to not only install and administer big data solutions but design solutions as well. Successful candidates are able to leverage HPE analytics software to turn data into insights and ultimately into strategic direction, enabling companies to more readily improve processes and identify and correct operational concerns. HPE's big data certs are focused on areas such as data protection and records management.

HPE's big data credentials include:

Climbing The HPE Certification Ladder

Whichever specialty path you choose, climbing HP's certification ladder can help you advance your career as you develop your skills and technical knowledge.

As an example, if you want to pursue HPE's Security certifications with ArcSight products, start with the HP ATP - ArcSight Security V1. It has no prerequisites and requires two exams: HP ArcSight Security Solutions (HP0-A100) and HP ArcSight ESM Security Administrator and Analyst (HP0-A116). From there, you can pursue one of the HPE ASE credentials: ArcSight Administrator V1 (ESM Advanced Administrator exam, HP0-M212P), ArcSight Analyst V1 (ESM Advanced Analyst exam, HP0-M213P) or ArcSight Logger V1 (Logger Administration and Operations exam, HP0-M211P). Each requires a single exam and there are no prerequisites. Finally, you can move on to the pinnacle credential: the HP Master ASE - ArcSight Security V2 credential. To obtain it, candidates must have passed the exam for the HP ASE - ArcSight Logger credential, and the exam for either the HP ASE - ArcSight Analyst or ArcSight Administrator credential.

A typical certification ladder for HPE Storage certifications is to start with the HP ATP - Storage Solutions cert, which requires passing a single exam: Foundations of HP Storage Solutions Exam HP0-J73. Then achieve the HP ASE - Storage Solutions Architect credential by passing three exams: Designing HP Backup Solutions Exam HP0-J63, Designing HP Enterprise Storage Solutions Exam HP0-J64 and Designing HP SAN Networking Solutions Exam HP0-J65. Finally, go for the HP Master ASE - Storage Solution Architect certification by passing Architecting Multi-site HP Storage Solutions Exam (HP0-J67) in addition to meeting other HP Master ASE requirements.
