HP Enterprise Reveals Composable Infrastructure As Evolution Of Hyper-Converged With HPE Synergy

HP Enterprise (HPE) announced Synergy, a composable infrastructure platform that brings public and private clouds together into a single management solution. Synergy is a modular-designed converged infrastructure that provides storage, compute, and fabric together in a single composable frame. Working in tandem with the hardware is a unified application programming interface (API) for management of the hardware and delivery of applications that works on both private and public clouds using the same command syntax.

Converged infrastructure, which combined the hardware required for one or more hosts all together in a single enclosure, gave way to hyper-converged infrastructure as an option for organizations to quickly add a lot of workload capacity all at once. Billed as a "private cloud in a box," hyper-converged appliances contain enough networking, compute and storage to run dozens to hundreds of VMs. There are significant benefits to running hyper-converged hardware. There are performance benefits from having the hardware engineered to work together. There is only one source for your support calls, so there's no finger-pointing when it's time to get a problem figured out.

But there are problems with hyper-converged infrastructure, as well. The biggest problem with a hyper-converged solution is that not every organization has the same workloads, so the mix of compute power to storage can be off. Heavily storage-dependent workloads will have organizations needing to buy more storage while their compute capacity still has plenty of room to grow. In almost all cases, you end up buying "just enough" of some resource, while overbuying on others. 

HPE brings a more modular hardware approach to its composable infrastructure. Designed to be an evolution of the hyperconverged market, you start with a framework that is ready to accept storage, compute and networking in a piecemeal approach. This by itself gives organizations a huge advantage by allowing them to customize the makeup of their infrastructure. However, the redesign of the infrastructure for HPE Synergy doesn’t stop at the hardware.

Management of the hardware into available resource pools is a requirement for any organization, but the current trend towards hardware management through APIs has organizations using, and having to learn, multiple APIs for managing different components. HPE Synergy uses a universal API, which can be thought of as a translator between the different component APIs. To speed up the availability for resource managers, the delegation of hardware into usable resource pools can be accomplished with a minimal number of commands.

Supplementing the Universal API, Software Defined Intelligence monitors the environment for changes in hardware and can automatically add new resources into defined resource pools, bolstering the capacity of the applications running on the hardware.

Finally, both the API and the Software Defined Intelligence work together to help administer both on-premises and cloud-based applications.  Again, the time spent learning the API for the private cloud is further leveraged when moving applications from on-prem to a public cloud.

Pricing details are still being worked out, as HP Enterprise is putting the finishing touches on HPE Synergy. Expect HPE Synergy to be available in the first half (Q2) of 2016 through channel partners.
