Juniper Networks' BYOD SDK Offers Per-App VPN Security

By - Source: Toms IT Pro

Juniper Networks announced Junos Pulse AppConnect, a software development kit (SDK) that enables per-application virtual private network (VPN) access for both iOS and Android devices. The SDK works with Juniper's Junos Pulse Secure Access Service to improve Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) security.

Junos Pulse AppConnect compliments common mobile device management (MDM) techniques such as application and data containerization by extending security to network communications. Companies can leverage their investment in Junos Pulse Secure Access Service Gateways to encrypt data moving from enterprise networks to individual apps on mobile devices.

In addition to the security benefits of Junos Pulse AppConnect technology, private personal traffic on corporate networks is reduced with the per-app VPN functionality. From the user's perspective, this should help alleviate concerns about using personal apps while connected to the VPN. Users also benefit because a separate application is no longer required to connect to the VPN.

Businesses are justifiably concerned about mobile device security. On an average mobile phone, thirty-one apps can access identity information, nineteen can access location, and five can access SMS messages, according to The Guardian Project. McAfee Labs' reported 17,000 new malicious programs targeting Android devices in the second quarter of 2013 alone. Data stealing Trojans are a major portion of this increase in malware.

"We believe the VPN market is undergoing a transition from securing devices to securing applications end-to-end. Juniper's vision is that every user will securely and transparently access only authorized corporate data from any device (personal or company owned) through applications from anywhere," said Tamir Hardof, senior director of security product marketing at Juniper Networks.

Junos Pulse AppConnect is part of the larger Junos Pulse suite, which is designed to deliver secure identity mobile and remote network access. The SDK will be generally available the week of December 16, 2013.
