Mellanox 10/40Gb NICs Support Microsoft Open CloudServer v2, Open Compute Project 2.0

Mellanox has announced new Open Compute Project 2.0 (OCP) and Microsoft Open CloudServer (OCS) version 2 support for select network interface controllers.

"We believe that open technologies will help accelerate adoption and enable customers to benefit from private, hybrid and public cloud computing," said Kushagra Vaid, General Manager of Server Engineering at Microsoft.

The ConnectX-3 Pro network interface controllers (NICs) will offer either 10Gb or 40Gb connection speeds. Both the 10Gb and 40Gb models will support Microsoft OCS-based systems. The 40Gb ConnectX-3 Pro EN card will offer support for OCP 2.0 storage and server systems.

The 10/40Gb cards feature RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) capabilities, giving a nice boost to performance potential. Additionally, the cards feature network overlay capabilities. NVGRE and VXLAN offload engines relieve stress from your hardware by carrying out offload operations mid-traffic.

"The growth of hyperscale and cloud computing requires new paradigms in infrastructure," said Gilad Shainer, VP of marketing at Mellanox Technologies, "and Mellanox Ethernet NICs provide rich performance and efficiency features, such as overlay network offloads and RDMA/RoCE to provide the best infrastructure return-on-investment."

The ConnectX-3 Pro cards are supported on multiple operating systems and distributions. These include Windows Server 2008 and 2012, VMware ESXi 4.x and 5.x, Citrix XenServer 6.1, Ubuntu 12.04, RHEL/CentOS 5.x and 6.x, and several Fedora distributions.

The ConnectX-3 Pro cards with support for Microsoft OCS version 2 are available now. The Connectx-3 Pro EN with support for OCP 2.0 will be available in Q4 of this year. For more information on Mellanox's NICs, visit the product page.

"We're pleased to see Mellanox’s readiness with a 10/40GbE NIC that embraces the Microsoft OCS cloud server specification and look forward to collaborating with them further on future open hardware solutions," said Vaid.
