Microsoft OCP Server Gets Mellanox 10/40GbE NIC Support

By - Source: Mellanox

Mellanox Technologies announced on Monday the support of 10 and 40 GbE for the Microsoft OCP server and storage specification. These specifications are based on hardware used to power Microsoft's global cloud services such as Office 365, Bing and Windows Azure.

According to Mellanox, ConnectX-3 Pro OCP-based 10/40GbE NICs with RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) is available now, offering optimized application latency and performance while maintaining low power consumption.

Microsoft filed a patent for a tray and chassis blade server right before joining the Open Compute Project in late January of this year, contributing its cloud server specification to the project.

"We're pleased to collaborate with Microsoft in delivering 10/40GbE NIC technology to their OCP server and storage designs to enable superior cloud productivity, efficiency, and sustainability," said Kevin Deierling, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies.

OCP stands for Open Compute Project, which was founded by Facebook back in April 2011. OCP provides specifications for building energy-efficient and scalable high-performance Web 2.0 data centers. Mellanox contributes networking specifications and provides I/O solutions for OCP-based systems. The company's solutions include 10/40 GbE NICs and switches.

"Mellanox server and storage interconnect solutions maximize the server and storage efficiency by allowing the most rapid communication speeds while reducing the system power consumption and high CPU processing overhead dictated by other interconnect devices. Mellanox technology allows performance-hungry applications and virtualized environments to fully utilize CPU resources and overlap I/O communication with CPU computation cycles," the company's OCP site explains.

The company's product page also states that its solutions increase the overall compute cluster efficiency and help "bring the OCP vision into reality." Optimized latency and performance for converged I/O infrastructures are offered by ConnectX-3 Pro OCP-based 40GbE NICs with RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) and overlay network offloads.

"We're pleased to see Mellanox's readiness with a 40GbE NIC that embraces the Microsoft OCP cloud server specification and look forward to collaborating with them further on future open hardware solutions," said Kushagra Vaid, General Manager, Cloud Infrastructure Server Engineering, at Microsoft.
