National Semiconductor introduced the first 16-Bit multi-chip microprocessor in 1973 (IMP-16), and the first single chip microprocessor in 1975 (PACE). Digital Equipment Corporation and Fairchild Semiconductor were also major early players in the 16-Bit game. But none of these caught on in a big way among makers of consumer electronics.
