In June 1976, Texas Instruments started putting its single-chip 16-bit microprocessor--the TMS9900--into its own home computers, including the TI-99/4 and the TI-99/4A. Because of the commercial success of these machines, the 9900 was one of the most popular early 16-bit chips.
