In 1982, AT&T Bell Labs produced the first single-chip 32-bit microprocessor. But when the company was broken up in 1984 the chip was renamed the Western Electric 32000. This chip and its descendents were used in Unix System V machines, including AT&T minicomputers, as well as the first 32-bit laptop computer (AT&T Bell Labs’ Companion).
