The concept behind QNAP's new Double Server TDS-16489U server is that it takes a full power application server and bundles it together with a full power storage server in one 3U chassis. By putting both servers together, you get the benefits of separate servers with the fast connection that comes from internal connectivity, plus a smaller hardware footprint and lower total cost of ownership.

To achieve this, the TDS-16489U, which could really benefit from a cute marketing name, utilizes two Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors with 4-core, 6-core, or 8-core configurations. Then, there are 16 available memory slots providing numerous memory configurations, ranging from 64 GB up to 1TB of RAM.  To get data back and forth from the application server part to the storage server part, there are three independent 12 Gb/s SAS controllers. The company saID this provides 3,800 MB/s throughput and 260,000 IOPS.

“The TDS-16489U resolves the difficulty of building virtualization environment infrastructures for businesses,” said David Tsao, Product Manager of QNAP. “Its unrivaled power from its dual processors also facilitates Big Data computing to process the data deluge created by Internet of Things applications.”

There are four PCIe slots available, which can support a 40GbE card for networking and a 12 Gb/s SAS HBA for connecting SAS enclosures, thus allowing up to 1 PB total storage capacity. Also supported are AMD Radeon R7 and R9 Series graphic cards for GPU passthrough to virtualized applications. Four USB 3.0 ports are included as well.

The TDS-16489U supports 16 hot-swappable 3.5-inch SAS, SATA, or 2.5 inch SSD drive bays to handle the storage, plus another four 2.5-inch rear trays to provide SSD caching.

The server features the latest QTS 4.2 operating system and runs both QNAP Virtualization Station and Container Station, which allows for data from guest OS and apps to be directly stored on the Double Server drives. Adding on the Double-Take Availability software offers comprehensive high-availability, disaster recovery and primary system failover. The Double Server also offers Auto Tiering thanks to QNAP’s Qtier Technology.

The Double Server TDS-16489U is now available from authorized resellers.
