Seagate 1200.2, Micron S600DC 12Gbps Enterprise SAS SSD Review

The Seagate 1200.2, which is identical to the Micron S600DC models aside from exterior markings, comes in the standard 2.5" form factor and features varying Z-heights of 15mm and 7mm. Our 1.6TB sample is from the Mainstream Endurance 10 DWPD class.

The SSD employs a dual port 12Gb/s SAS connection and has two PCBs nestled inside the case. The 1200.2 features two Micron TwinDie DDR3-1600 SDRAM, which utilizes two 4Gb die per package for a total of 1GB of capacity per DRAM package. We also spot the co-branded LSI/Seagate TT50761 controller.

The controller and NAND packages are covered with thermal pads to reduce heat generation. The SSD is comprised of two PCBs connected via a ribbon cable. Unfolding the top PCB reveals two inner alloy inserts sandwiched between the PCBs. Each internal-facing PCB employs its own alloy cover. The alloy covers have strips of thermal padding, which mates with interior components to dissipate heat, and the SSD features throttling algorithms that reduce power to ensure a safe operating envelope (70C or below).

The design leverages 10 packages of cost-effective and endurant Micron 16nm L95B eMLC NAND. The SSD also features 10 eASIC bridges, which magnify per-channel throughput. There are ten open pads for NAND packages and additional eASIC bridges, which will be populated in denser models. The SSD also includes 12 yellow capacitor emplacements, which provide enough capacitance to flush all data in transit to the NAND in the event of an unplanned host power-loss event.

The SSDs employ T10-DIF End-to-End ECC to the internal and external data paths. Several models are geared for the security conscious and include TCG-compliant Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology, FIPS 140-2 encryption and Secure Downloads and Diagnostics features.
