1985: MIPS R2000 - Server Processor Milestones

The R2000 was MIPS' first design that implemented the MIPS I instruction set architecture and was the first merchant RISC processor overall. While the chip competed in mini computers with the Motorola m68K, as well as Intel's 386 processors, the MIPS R2000 and R3000 found their way into Digital Equipment servers as well as into the Kendall Square Research supercomputer. The R4000, released in 1991, became the first 64-bit processor. SGI acquired MIPS in 1992.
