It also makes sense to have two phone numbers, for the same split purposes. There are many options for how to do this exactly. Some can be had for free, depending on your requirements and features you need.

None of these will require additional hardware over the phone itself, although some may require the use of an app or even access to a website in order to function. T-Mobile even offers the DIGITS program that lets you add up to five numbers to one phone or tablet, direct from your carrier. Here are five other ways you can add a second line to your smartphone.

Google Voice

Google's Voice is among the top methods for adding a phone number to your smartphone. Plus, it is super easy to implement and free. The service acts similar to a PBX front-end and is capable of routing calls to several different numbers and devices, including VOIP platforms. The service requires users to set up a Gmail account and then simply signup for a number and assign that number to your preferred device.

Google Voice comes with a wide range of features including free calls and SMS within the U.S. and Canada (low rates for international calls), call routing, conference calling, recording/online archiving, customizable call preferences, and call routing among a host of others. A new update also allows for photo sharing with anyone on your call list through SMS. No need to worry about having your private number being shown on Caller ID either as the app will show your Google number when placing calls and works with both Android and iPhone devices.


Line2 is a Cloud-based solution for gaining an extra number that requires an $8.30-per month commitment, or $12.45 for a Pro account. Both come with a seven-day free trial. The additional number can be used on any mobile device, although you can only use that number on one device at a time instead of multiple devices using a single account. You also are only allotted 5,000 minutes (for both versions) of out-calling going calls, but incoming calls and text messages are free.

Features for Standard include call-forwarding/screening, group calling/messaging and transferring of existing numbers without cost. The Pro version adds on to those with simultaneous call-forwarding (up to six numbers), the inclusion of multiple lines, auto-attendant and dial-by-name options. After-hours screening is also included, and routes calls to voicemail during user-specified time blocks, a valuable feature for privacy after work hours. If needed, users can also add a Virtual Fax to the mix for an extra $120 per-year, giving them another level of adaptation for business options.


What separates eVoice from the host of other business phone number apps is its user-friendly interface. This pay-per-service offers several plans with tiered pricing and options to match, ranging from $12.99 to $79.99 a month. All tiers include monthly-allotted minutes for outgoing calls (300 to 4,000, respectively) along with up to 15 extensions and the amount of different numbers you can have, topping out at 45.

As far as features go, eVoice includes call history log, speed dial and the outbound eVoice number being used shown on caller ID. Users can also program their mobile devices to transfer calls directly to voicemail during allotted times, engage in conference calls/group messaging and take advantage of Auto Attendant to direct incoming calls.


RingCentral is a business-oriented app that makes a perfect option for use with remote employees. The platform utilizes a PBX platform with Cloud-based capabilities that seamlessly integrate with third-party apps such as Office 365, SalesForce and Oracle. It also comes in three price-points that range depending on how many employees are signed up for the service: $34.99 for a single user (for one-year contract), $24.99 per user for up to 19 employees and $21.99 for up to 99 employees, all the way up to 1,000-plus if your business mandates it.

Each option ranges in minutes from 1,000 to 10,000 and offers virtual fax, conference calling/group messaging, unlimited video meetings and call logging. The also offer call management and administrative duties as well as custom app development/deployment options and even phone rental if needed.


Grasshopper is another paid virtual PBX system aimed at small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs with the options for added toll-free or local numbers. Users can opt for mobile, or landlines and incoming calls are routed to an auto-answer service that lets the caller choose who they need to talk to. As you might imagine, the feature set is aimed at businesses with conference calling, group messaging, call-announce, virtual fax and voicemail speech to text options.

Price plans for Grasshopper range from pay-as-you-go at $12 per-month with a $0.06 per-minute (yes, you pay for minutes over the monthly fee) to $199 per-month with 10,000 minutes allotted for outgoing calls. These are high on the price side for sure, but you get unlimited extensions, music-on-hold and name directory (among a host of other options).

Bottom Line

These are just a handful of additional line and number choices that can be had for free or at the subscription level. Most can be easily installed through an app. The feature set of these options are great for their respective price-points.
