Unitrends launched on Tuesday a free edition of Unitrends Enterprise Backup for the unlicensed (aka free) version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor. This release makes Unitrends the first company to provide a free, fully functional solution for both versions of the vSphere Hypervisor, and enables VMware to compete directly with Microsoft in the small and medium-sized (SMB) market.
"While virtualization-focused backup vendors have struggled with the licensing restrictions on VMware’s vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP), Unitrends is able to provide support for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor as a result of its Unified Data Protection architecture," the company said. "This innovative and highly scalable architecture provides unified host- and guest-level data protection for both virtual and physical environments."
Unitrends Enterprise Backup protects over one hundred different types of operating systems and applications. It completely recovers VMware guests in less than 5 minutes, and provides full live recovery and DR testing audio capabilities. Users can also achieve RPO and RTO with item-level, point-in-time recovery from host-level snapshots.
The free Unitrends backup solution also provides built-in support for tertiary backup and archiving such as disk, tape, NAS and SAN. The software allows users to create schedules that can put their backups on autopilot – new VMs are even automatically added to the default backup schedule. The solution is even capable of incremental forever backup scheduling with one-minute RPO granularity.
The new free addition isn't a watered-down, time-limited "trial" of a fully-featured premium product, but rather a complete solution that protects up to four VMs forever on provides online support -- for free. The new free edition is available for VMware ESX, ESXi, ESXi Free and Microsoft Hyper-V. The company also offers a NFR Edition for VMware certified professionals and VMUG members, and a trial edition.
"SMBs can now benefit from enterprise-class data protection for the free version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor at no cost to them whatsoever," said Maria Pressley, Unitrends’ chief evangelist. "Unitrends Enterprise Backup isn’t simply a utility for running manual ad hoc backups either. It’s a fully functioning solution that includes automated scheduling, instant recovery, global deduplication and archiving, among other advanced backup and recovery features."
Unitrends Enterprise Backup Free Edition for the unlicensed version of VMware vSphere Hypervisor is currently being demoed at VMworld 2013 in San Francisco. Interested businesses wanting to take advantage of this free solution can download the software directly from the company here.
