Nvidia’s Grid Visual Computing Appliance: a Game Changer for VDI?Nvidia’s Grid Visual Computing Appliance: a Game Changer for VDI?

The industry’s very first Visual Computing Appliance (VCA) enabled by Nvidia’s grid technology, is seemingly making strides for virtual desktop infrastructure. Will it be a game changer for VDI?

Nvidia’s first Visual Computing Appliance made a splash at this week’s GTC 2013 conference in San Jose, California after an announcement by the company’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. Nvidia’s grid technology has the ability to “offload graphics processing from the CPU to the GPU in virtualized environments.” The Grid VCA is capable of running complex, graphics intensive applications delivering them to client computers over the network.

The much anticipated rack-mount server is available in two configurations; giving customers a choice of 8 or 16 GPUs, 32 or 64GB of GPU memory, 192 or 384GB of system memory, 16 or 32 thread CPUs. The appliance is able to support up to 8 or 16 concurrent users, offering small to medium sized companies more flexibility.

Nvidia Grid VCA offers all of the benefits of VDI, including easy accessibility for users and lower IT costs. The VCA is able to support demanding applications, such as Adobe’s Creative Suite and Dassalt’s 3D design software, without compromising performance; giving end users “the same rich graphics experience they would get from an expensive, dedicated PC under their desk.” Users are able to create a virtual machine with just a click of a button, on any Windows, Linux or Mac machine on the network. Nividia calls these high performance VMs “workspaces” and allows them to be easily reallocated based on need and availability.

Now the question becomes, will Nvidia Grid VCA system be a game changer for VDI? As 2013 is surely the year of VDI, my guess is it will definitely have a positive impact eliminating at least one of the bottlenecks to wider VDI adoption.
