Vidyo Says It Can Do 5MP Telepresence in Software

Telepresence provider Vidyo has an idea how to take advantage of Apple's MacBook Pro Retina display: 5 megapixel videoconferencing.

With 5.2 megapixels available on a Retina MacBook Pro, it is almost silly to limit a video conference to just 1080p or 720p. Vidyo said that it can deliver up to 5 megapixels via software and without additional hardware support. Granted, Vidyo is not offering 5 megapixel video conferencing, but a 5 megapixel telepresence session that combines a 720p or 1080p video stream with an additional data stream to fill up to 5 megapixels, but the result is noteworthy nevertheless.

"While legacy telepresence platforms require redesign and fork-lift upgrades to take advantage of evolving technology, Vidyo’s software-based platform affords the flexibility to capitalize on new, off the shelf hardware, like the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, proving our ability to benefit from Moore’s Law," said Vidyo co-founder and CEO, Ofer Shapiro, in a prepared statement. “Customers have come to expect technology that keeps pace with the emergence of new form factors in an effective and affordable way; Vidyo is the only company that consistently delivers on end-user expectations.”

Vidyo is not offering 5 megapixel video conferencing, but a 5 megapixel telepresence session.

Vidyo said that its Adaptive Video Layering is key to enabling "more capable endpoints like the new MacBook Pro." Even if not all participants in a telepresence session use the same display resolution and network connection, each user receives a dynamically optimized video and audio feed tailored to a specific endpoint.
