VMware: Latest Software-Defined Data Center Solutions Go GA

By - Source: Toms IT Pro

Less than three weeks after VMworld 2014, VMware shared the general availability of several products announced at the conference. While vSphere 6.0 was not on this list, several key products did make it to GA, including NSX 6.1, vCenter SRM 5.8, vCloud Suite 5.8, vRealize Suite 6 and more. Read: Notes from VMworld 2014

NSX was a huge announcement last year at VMworld 2013 and version 6.1 builds on the original offering with a new key feature in micro-segmentation. With NSX 6.1, the administrator is no longer limited to perimeter or edge security. NSX 6.1 now allows the admin to place firewalls and virtual security appliances in front of each virtual machine, or a subset of VMs, instead of being limited to only the perimeter or the network. This multi-layer security for your infrastructure adds a tremendous amount of barriers to hackers without the high capital investment of hardware appliances.

vCloud Suite 5.8 is a new product bundle designed for organizations looking to deploy a private cloud. The vCloud Suite has the foundational products for private clouds, including vCloud Automation Center, vCenter Operations, vCloud Networking and Security, vCloud Director and vSphere Enterprise Plus. The only notable exception is NSX which can be purchased as an add-on.

The vRealize Operations Insight gives the administrator operational management for both the physical and virtual infrastructure. This single pane of glass management tool supports dedicated team dashboards and reporting. In addition to daily support aspects, vRealize Operations Insight includes vCenter Log Insight for statistical data analysis of logging and events.

vRealize Suite 6 is enabling organizations to manage the hybrid cloud with a unified management experience. The vRealize Suite covers the enterprise need for self-service, virtualization life-cycle and automation on the technical side to operations, capacity planning and application-aware features such as dependency mapping. In addition, critical business features, such as usage reporting and cost analysis for chargeback, are also included.

vSphere Data Protection Advanced 5.8 is taking advantage of the mature EMC Avamar technology, offering data protection with the high performance and storage efficiency of Avamar's deduplication ability that now includes replication for remote protection.

vSphere Remote Office Branch Office is a new suite with many of the traditional enterprise offerings from VMware such as ESXi, vMotion, VMware HA and vShield packed in a smaller offering designed to support up to 25 virtual machines per site (or sites). This gives organizations the ability to ensure remote sites have a similar infrastructure, easing support requests, configuration drift and allowing for expansion without breaking the bank.
