PROMISE Introduces VSky A-Series Scale-Out Storage Platform

By - Source: PROMISE Technology Inc.

PROMISE Technology Inc. has announced its new VSky A-Series. The A-Series is a software-defined scale-out storage platform designed to address petabyte-scale deployments for backup/archiving, media editing, video surveillance, virtualized environments, and content delivery systems. Promise has an established track record in these areas, and its new A-Series platform expands upon that success by utilizing many of its proven products as building blocks in a new flexible and highly-scalable architecture.

The VSky A-Series serves as the cornerstone of the system, and it supports block (iSCSI), file (CIFS, NFS), and object storage (S3/Swift) in a single flat namespace that is managed from a unified interface. The system also provides thin provisioning, snapshots, local/remote replication and erasure coding.

“With the amount of video, pictures, audio, and email growing exponentially, enterprises need a solution to manage the enormous challenge of data growth,” said James Lee, CEO, PROMISE Technology.  “Scale-out storage is increasingly the answer for enterprises that are buried under massive volumes of data stored on a variety of hardware and software. With VSky A-Series we are offering an all-in-one software-defined storage solution that enables users to manage huge amounts of data with greater cost savings, scalability, flexibility and simplicity.”

The VSky platform offers two deployment options that address different workload requirements. The 1U VSky A1100 appliance server interfaces with multiple Vess and VTrak storage appliances to provide one unified storage pool that can be easily scaled out to meet capacity requirements. The A1100 connects both to the internal and external networks with two dedicated 10 Gbe ports for each layer. It connect to RAID storage enclosures via 2 x 8 Gb Fibre Channel ports, and connects to JBODs via a standard SAS connector.

The 4U A1970 combines compute and storage into a dual-node active/active server chassis. The A1970 features 70 top-loaded drive bays and dual Xeon E5-2609 processors with 64 GB of ECC DDR3. Two additional VSKy J3970sDR JBODs can be added per node with a standard SAS connection, and it features 4 x 10 Gbe SFP+ ports for network connectivity.

Both systems scale-up to 4 storage units per node, and scale out to 16 nodes. Capacity expansions are non-disruptive and do not require system downtime, which allows administrators to scale the system as needs grow. The system also supports flash-based multi-tier caching for high-performance environments.

The VSky platform is genius in many respects, one being that Promise has an established customer base with a large ecosystem of Vess and VTrak appliances already in the field. The platform is perfect for those with existing infrastructure and will allow customers to expand their environment while unlocking a new robust feature set that enhances scalability and manageability.

The VSky A110 and A1970 will be available in Q2 through distributors and VARs. The VSky A1100 will initially be compatible with Vess products, and expanded to VTrak in Q3.
