WD Intros Latest Windows Storage Servers
On Thursday, Western Digital updated its line of network storage products with the WD Sentinel DS5100 and WD Sentinel DS6100 "S-Series" ultra-compact network storage plus servers. Available now, the WD Sentinel DS5100 is pre-populated in capacities of 4 or 8 TB, and the WD Sentinel DS6100 is available with capacities of 8, 12, or 16 TB.
According to the company, WD Sentinel DS5100 features a dual-core Intel Xeon processor clocked at 2.3 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, one 2.5 inch boot drive, and four 3.5 hard drives totaling up to 8 TB of storage. The device also features four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet, a dual power option, Windows Azure and Office 365 integration, and hardware-based RAID. The appliance's overall dimensions are 6.30 x 8.10 x 8.8 inches.
As for the WD Sentinel DS6100 appliance, this device packs a quad-core Intel Xeon processor clocked at 2.5 GHZ, 16 GB of RAM, two 2.5 inch boot drives, and four 3.5 inch hard drives totaling a max capacity of 16 TB. This appliance also provides four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet, dual power with two adapters, and hardware RAID. The DS6100 also integrates into Windows Azure and Office 365, and measures 6.30 x 8.10 x 8.8 inches.
"The WD Sentinel S-series network appliances are engineered with Intel Xeon processors, pre-populated with WD Se datacenter 3.5-inch hard drives for rapid deployment, and feature dedicated 2.5-inch boot drives for maximum reliability," said Bill Evans, general manager of WD's business storage solutions group. "No other vendor offers a comparable network storage plus server in an equally small form factor. With a small footprint and quiet fan, an S-series appliance can be deployed anywhere."
Some of the "S" Series highlights provided by WD include compatibility with Apple Time Machine, anywhere access, the integrated RAID/RAID controller, Windows Storage Spaces support, data protection with backup and restore up to 25 users and 50 devices, and the automatic creation of company share and user share.
Both network storage appliances come pre-installed with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, a server suite designed for running the network infrastructure of small and medium businesses with no more than 75 users or workstations. Some of the features include server backup configuration using a simple wizard, daily client computer backups, File History personal data protection, Remote Web Access, the My Server app for Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows Phone, Office 365 integration and Windows Azure Backup integration.
WD Sentinel S-series appliances are available today at CDW, PC Connection, and Insight, and through select VARs, resellers, and distributors worldwide. Pricing starts at $2,560.00 USD for the WD Sentinel DS5100 4 TB network storage plus server. WD Guardian Services, which offer flexible, affordable and hassle-free technical support, are available for periods of one or more years, the company said.
