Primary Data Launches Data Virtualization Platform, Steve Wozniak Chief Scientist
Primary Data has introduced its Software Defined Storage (SDS) platform, which enables companies to virtualize data across a single global dataspace. Primary Data decouples enterprise data from underlying storage hardware, giving customers the ability to transparently access data as it migrates through directly attached and/or cloud storage tiers.
"Primary Data is a catalyst that makes the software-defined datacenter a reality," said Lance Smith, Primary Data chief executive officer. "By virtualizing data across a single global dataspace, enterprises can extract more performance from their infrastructure and easily scale with growth. Automated, policy-driven data placement enables IT to finally respond dynamically to business requirements in real time, delivering breakthrough agility that transforms today’s datacenters."
By abstracting data from its underlying storage, Primary Data allows organizations to easily scale their infrastructure to meet storage requirements. Policy-driven data placement helps to make data access more efficient by tailoring data storage location based on customer requirements. Primary Data separates the metadata that describes files from the file data itself, which allows broad access to data across storage platforms.
Primary Data was first offered as an integrated platform, but now users can easily add data from other vendor platforms as needed. An intelligent Policy Engine automatically places data in the correct storage resource based on application requirements that are updated in real time.
An interesting addendum to the primary announcement is the news that Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak has joined Primary Data to serve as Chief Scientist.
"Innovations like wearables, digital assistants, and the Internet of Things are making computing more and more transparent in our lives, and for technology to remain accessible, we need to ensure data remains seamless as it serves us information," said Wozniak. "Primary Data uses data virtualization to dynamically place data anywhere as applications demand. I'm excited to share our data virtualization platform with the world."
Primary Data will announce pricing in 2015.
