Today on Tom's IT Pro: How SoftLayer Uses GPUs to Enable High Performance Cloud Computing and Review: Intel Xeon E5-2600 Eight-Core CPUs, and Cloud Computing’s Cambrian Explosion.

Veteran technology Journalist David Strom, one of the leading experts on network and Internet technologies, highlights the manner in which SoftLayer will offer a new high-performance cloud computing service in his latest article for Tom's IT Pro.The hosting company is combining Intel's ES-2600 Sandy Bridge servers with one or two of Nvidia's Tesla M2090 graphics processors to power the service in its data centers. 

David begins his coverage by running down the history of supercomputers. Over half a decade ago, these powerhouses ran on collections of CPUs. Since then, GPUs have entered the picture, creating hybrid supercomputers based on standard CPUs and graphics processors. You even had folks developing primitive supercomputers composed of linked PlayStation 3 game consoles!

SoftLayer developed its CPU/GPU-based cloud computing service to greatly boost performance over its standard offerings. As David writes, "SoftLayer claims a 10x computing performance increase over standard CPU configurations."

As Chris notes, with the E5-2600 series, Sandy Bridge architecture has finally made its way to the company's dual- and quad-socket-capable Xeon processors. He comes away impressed by how much E5-2600s improve efficiency and performance. Intel has indeed replaced the best with something better.
