ZENworks Update Enhances Endpoint Management, Security

By , James Sullivan - Source: Toms IT Pro

Novell released both, ZENworks Suite, a consolidation of all previous ZENworks services and bundles, and ZENworks 11 Support Pack 3, an update that, amongst other things, provides enhanced auditing features and patch management capabilities. Both released items are part of Novell's endpoint management solution, ZENworks, designed so IT can better manage the growing number of PCs, tablets and smart devices infiltrating the enterprise.

Novell's all-inclusive ZENworks Suite includes products for configuration management, application virtualization, patch management, a service desk toolset, endpoint security management, and asset management, all in a single offering.

"The new Novell ZENworks Suite will provide Novell customers with more value and ensure they are receiving the most from their ZENworks investment," said Eric Varness, vice president of product management and marketing for Novell. "This new suite was created specifically with the enterprise in mind to help them better manage and protect their complete endpoint landscape."

According to the company, Support Pack 3 provides new auditing features that allow users to track changes made in the management console, and remotely manage files written to removable devices, a definite necessity in highly regulated environments. This new release also features a new reporting engine that makes it easy to collect and analyze information by running a wide range of customized reports.

ZENworks 11 Support Pack 3 enables control of Windows desktop and server operating systems and Linux distributions, including SUSE and Red Hat's Enterprise products, using a web-based ZENworks console, allowing for overall management of Windows and Linux desktops that includes securing Windows environments.

Also new in the Support Pack 3 release are updated automated patch management capabilities. Policy-based patch deployments allow users to define their preferred state of workstations and maintenance windows when patches can be applied. There's also a new diagnostics dashboard that allows IT to quickly identify issues and "drill down" to the ZENworks processes on any server for advanced troubleshooting.

Policy-based encryption for data, including for removable storage devices, is available, along with driver-level firewall protection for end user devices. A security management console can be found as part of the web-based ZENworks Control Center.

The company also provides a list of more new features, including multizone content sharing, full disk encryption (FDE) support for OPAL, improved scale and performance, in-product diagnostics, and imaging enhancements. Also listed are full Windows 8 support, inventory pruning, improved software inventory, and more.

"With the rapid pace that new devices and software are hitting the market, IT has more endpoints to manage than ever before, and those endpoints have more capabilities that the workforce wants to use to improve productivity," says Varness. "ZENworks allows administrators to manage users, not just devices, and includes the tools required to monitor and report security concerns in real-time."

With the latest ZENworks updates, Novell declares that the resulting reduction in infrastructure related purchases will help reduce risk without increasing costs.

The new ZENworks Suite is available now. Downloadable trial versions and a request form for more information can be found on the Novell ZENworks product page.
