Mellanox Introduces Next Generation 100Gbps LinkX Cables And Transceivers

Mellanox introduced the new LinkX 100 Gbps high performance interconnect hardware aimed at the needs of data center and high performance computing applications. The new LinkX transceivers along with the new LinkX 100 Gbps cables support the high-density, low-power, Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP28) connector-based Switch-IB switch platform.

The new Mellanox 100 Gbps Silicon Photonics Transceivers can reach up to 2 km using new LinkX drivers, TIAs and silicon photonics chips. The new transceivers are 1550 nm Parallel Single Mode transceivers in a QSFP28 form factor and are 2.5 times more efficient than standard 40 G QSFP hardware.

Mellanox also introduced a new 100Gbps Vertical-cavity service-emitting laser (VCSEL) diode transceiver. The new transceiver is capable of reaches of 100 m and is ideal for use over existing optical multi-mode (OM3 and OM4) fiber networks. The new VCSEL transceivers consume 2 W maximum with no retiming, and 2.8 W maximum with full retiming.

New copper splitter breakout cables from Mellanox connect 100 Gbps switch ports to servers and storage appliances with either 25 G or 50 G ports. The new 100 Gbps active optical cables (AOCs) and direct attach copper cables (DACs) enable 36 ports in a 1U switch, making 100 Gbps deployments as easy as 10 Gbps. The new Mellanox AOCs utilize new ICs that integrate multiple 25 Gbps clock and recovery function (CDR) and greatly reduce power consumption for the optical engine.

Mellanox performs full system testing of all LinkX interconnect products to Bit Error Rate (BER) 10-15 providing a 1,000 times reduction in transmission errors when compared with competing products.
