Mellanox Announces 50 Gb/s Silicon Photonics Modulators And Detectors

Mellanox Technologies, a supplier of end-to-end Ethernet and InfiniBand solutions, announced a new demonstration of 50 Gb/s silicon photonics optical modulators and detectors at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) conference. These 50 Gb/s devices are important components in 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s LinkX cables and transceivers, which are required to enable the next generation of InfiniBand and Ethernet speeds. These 50 Gb/s devices are a key component to developing end to end solutions for HDR 200 Gb/s InfiniBand and Ethernet infrastructure by the company’s 2020 goal.

“Silicon photonics is the enabling technology for 200Gb/s InfiniBand and Ethernet networks,” said Amir Prescher, executive vice president of business development and interconnect products at Mellanox. “The QSFP56 doubles the front panel density for next generation switches; enables 200G copper DACs and 50G breakout cables for adapters and inside-the-rack applications; and silicon photonics transceivers supports all data center reaches to 2km.”

The company plans to sell 50 Gb/s and 200 Gb/s Direct Attach Copper cables (DACs), as well as copper splitter cables. In addition, silicon photonics-based AOCs will be available for reaches up to 200m, and then silicon photonics transceivers will be available for longer reaches up to 2 km. All of these will be downward compatible with the previous generation of 40 and 100Gb/s networks.

In addition, Mellanox and Innolight Technology Corp announced availability of interoperable parallel single mode (PSM4) transceivers. This allows data centers to mix and match transceivers.
