Supercomputers are not the only entities that require faster network connectivity. Today's enterprises are challenged, having to use business solutions including data analytics, business intelligence, Big Data, security, and other network-demanding workloads that require the performance that supercomputers offer. To handle these demands, smart solutions offer fast interconnectivity and need to combat CPU overhead.

Mellanox touted that its latest solution, the Switch-IB 2, a 100 Gb/s Smart Switch, provides just that, improving performance by up to 10 times by offloading MPI operations from the CPU.

To achieve its goal with the Switch-IB 2, Mellanox integrated 144 SerDes (Serializer/Deserializer), each of which provides at least 1 Gb/s up to 25 Gb/s speeds per lane, resulting in up to 7.02 billion messages per second, 90 nanoseconds of switch latency and decreased power consumption. Mellanox also included hardware in the Switch-IB 2 to help manage collective communications, which are used in HPC protocols such as MPI and SHMEM, lowering network traffic, which helps reduce latency and CPU overhead.

High performance computing applications need faster speed, stability and scale. Current applications in Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT) and hyperscale markets are projected to outstrip the performance current solutions offer. Mellanox targets these demanding applications by implementing EDR 100 Gb/s speeds and smart switch technology into its Switch-IB 2.

A number of companies, ranging from big names such as Dell, HPE and Lenovo to smaller business solution providers, are helping push Mellanox's Switch-IB 2 along with their current solutions. For example, DDN, a company that builds advanced storage platforms for big data, suggested that a network solution involving its SFA14K hybrid storage platform, plus Mellanox's Switch-IB 2 smart switch, may offer the real-time mass data processing needed in intensive applications such as data analytics and business intelligence.
